Curriculum
Montessori Curriculum & Philosophy
At Petite Luminaries Montessori, our curriculum is guided by the principles and philosophy developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. We believe that children are naturally curious, capable learners who thrive when given the freedom to explore within a carefully prepared environment.
Our Montessori curriculum is designed to support the holistic development of the child—intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically—through purposeful, hands-on learning experiences. Educators act as guides, observing each child closely to understand their developmental readiness and interests, and introducing materials at the appropriate time to support meaningful learning.
The Prepared Environment
The classroom is intentionally designed to encourage independence, concentration, and self-discipline. Montessori materials are displayed on open shelves, accessible to children and arranged from simple to complex. Each material has a specific purpose and allows children to learn through repetition, self-correction, and exploration.
Learning Areas in the Montessori Curriculum
Practical Life
Children develop independence, coordination, and responsibility through real-life activities such as pouring, dressing, food preparation, and care of the environment. These activities build focus, confidence, and respect for the classroom community.
Sensorial
Sensorial materials help children refine their senses by exploring size, shape, texture, sound, and colour. This work supports cognitive development and prepares children for abstract thinking in later learning.
Language
Language development is supported through rich vocabulary experiences, phonetic awareness, writing preparation, and early reading activities. Children progress at their own pace, guided by their interest and readiness.
Mathematics
Montessori mathematics materials allow children to understand numbers and mathematical concepts in a concrete, hands-on way before moving to abstract thinking. This approach builds a strong and lasting foundation in numeracy.
Cultural Studies
Children explore geography, science, nature, and cultural awareness, developing respect for the world around them. This area fosters curiosity, global awareness, and appreciation for diversity.
Following the Child
A core principle of Montessori education is “following the child.” Children are encouraged to choose their work, develop concentration, and work independently or collaboratively. This process nurtures intrinsic motivation and a lifelong love of learning.
Role of the Educator
Educators observe, guide, and support rather than direct. Through careful observation and intentional lesson presentations, educators ensure each child is challenged appropriately and supported with respect and care.
Daily Rhythm and Routine
Consistent daily routines provide structure and security, allowing children to feel confident and engaged. Long, uninterrupted work periods encourage deep concentration and meaningful learning.
Our Commitment
At Petite Luminaries Montessori, our curriculum is rooted in respect for the child and a commitment to excellence. By providing a calm, consistent, and enriching Montessori environment, we support children in becoming confident, independent, and capable learners.
Daily Routine
Our Daily Routine at Petite Luminaries Montessori
Our daily routine is thoughtfully designed to provide consistency, calm, and purpose, allowing children to feel secure while developing independence and confidence. While the rhythm of the day remains consistent, the Montessori approach allows flexibility to follow each child’s individual needs and interests.
Morning Arrival & Welcome
Children are warmly greeted and welcomed into the classroom. They independently hang up belongings, settle in, and choose initial work, promoting responsibility and confidence from the start of the day.
Snack & Self-Care
Snack is offered in a calm, self-directed manner where children practice independence, grace, and courtesy. Children clean up after themselves and care for the environment.
Uninterrupted Montessori Work Cycle
A long, uninterrupted work period allows children to fully engage in Montessori activities at their own pace. During this time, children choose their work from the prepared environment across key curriculum areas, including Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, and Cultural Studies.
Educators observe, guide, and present lessons individually or in small groups, supporting each child’s development and readiness.
Outdoor Play
Children spend time outdoors daily, engaging in physical movement, exploration, and social play. Outdoor time supports physical development, well-being, and connection with nature.
Lunch
Lunch is a relaxed, social experience that encourages independence, respectful conversation, and healthy eating habits. Children participate in setting up and cleaning their eating space.
Rest / Quiet Time
After lunch, children engage in rest or quiet activities. This time supports emotional regulation and allows children to recharge, respecting individual needs.
Afternoon Work & Enrichment
In the afternoon, children return to Montessori work, creative activities, or small group experiences. This may include art, music, language enrichment, or cultural exploration.
Afternoon Outdoor Time
A second outdoor period allows children to release energy, strengthen gross motor skills, and enjoy fresh air before the end of the day.
Closing Circle & Dismissal
The day ends with reflection, songs, stories, or group conversations. Children prepare for dismissal calmly and confidently, maintaining a positive transition home.
Our Commitment to Routine
Consistent daily routines provide children with a sense of order and security. At Petite Luminaries Montessori, routines are designed to support independence, concentration, and a love of learning while respecting the natural rhythm of childhood.
